Program Description: 

An innovative, hands-on program for students. The programs will inspire students and expose them to metalsmithing, fabrication, and welding in the LWHS shops. Session A - Insect Welding: Doug Hellikson, LWHS Tech Arts - Open to Rising 5th-7th Graders Students will study the structure of insects; create and prototype their own sculptures; and then fabricate them in metal using a wide range of techniques and tools including bending, shaping & cutting metal, and welding. Session B - Metalsmithing & Jewlery: Laurel Nathanson, LWHS Tech Arts - Open to Rising 7th-8th Graders Students will learn how to work in wire and sheet metal in the creation of a necklace. They will learn how to cut, bend, curve, drill, texture, sand, and finish metals. They will even get a taste of using fire while safely learning how to use a torch to make metals softer.
