Program Description:

LEAP is a community based after school program that serves 4-8th graders 2:00-6:00pm Monday-Friday. LEAP offers enrichment classes in literacy, cooking, recreation, and STEM for 1.5 hours a day and study hall for 1.5 hours aday, where staff assist them with homework, projects, or tutoring. We offer transportation from local schools on a YMCA bus. Goals of LEAP are to: develop independent, confident youth who are equipped to navigate the transition from childhood to adolescence; provide leadership opportunities to empower youth as global citizens and critical thinkers; foster 21st century skills in science and technology; provide a creative space where youth feel a sense of ownership within their community. LEAP offers students a chance to explore topics such as journalism, cooking, engineering, athletics, and performance through 10 week enrichment clubs that they choose. All clubs have an introductory class and then work toward a final product such as a show, art exhibit, tournament or publications. STEM programming is a major focus of the program, offering students a chance to participate in innovative programming in robotics, digital and stop motion animation, engineering, and other technologies. Much of the design of the STEM program is student-driven.
