Huckleberry Youth's Wellness Academy (HWA) is a FREE program provides low-income teens who are first-generation college bound with a three-year comprehensive college access/health career exposure pipeline including: health education, academic case management, career exploration, internships, job-readiness skills, job placement assistance, academic tutoring, post secondary counseling and much more. HWA is located in the Huckleberry Youth Health Center (HYHC) , which also houses the Cole St Clinic—a teen and young adult health clinic.
Recruitment takes place in spring of freshman year. HWA intentionally seeks out average performing applicants who need support and guidance in order to successfully graduate high school and transition to college. The program begins during the summer between 9th and 10th grade with an intensive writing skills summer program. Huckleberry Wellness Academy participation consists of: weekly cohort meetings from 10th grade through 12th grades, access to caring Academic Case Managers who are trained to help students set and achieve academic and college related goals, 1:1 support for students and parents with college and financial aid applications, access to free tutoring, access to free SAT/ACT prep, a paid internship in a medical or health related setting, college trips and fields trips to local hospitals and health centers, and additional case management and support through the first year of college.
Participants can earn small participation stipends each year in the program; accrued stipends are dispersed after graduation from high school in the form of a college scholarship.
Days/Times: Mon-Fri, 2pm-7pm. There is also a monthly Saturday field trip.
