This local division of the nationwide Young Marines is an organization that teaches leadership and life skills to all kinds of kids. It's not just an organization for troubled kids or a recruitment agency for the military. Before they can get the title of "Young Marine," newbies go through a series of meetings called "Boot Camp" in which they participate in activities such as close order drills, individual and military courtesies, rank structure, discipline, and citizenship. It is nothing like military boot camp where they introduce weaponry and combat skills. Young Marines meet at least once a month when they sleep aboard the USS Hornet CVS-12 museum in Alameda. They also camp and do other activities in military bases in the Bay Area.Six lucky participants are awarded $500 scholarships toward their college education. The "Young Marine of the Year" is awarded $1000.
