Program Description:

The Bayview Youth Advocates (BYA) program is a youth-led multicultural collaborative comprised of theyouth committed to planning, developing and implementing activities such as Bayview Youth Summit thatpromote tolerance, understanding, diversity and racial harmony in their schools and in their community. Thegoal of their message of tolerance and understanding is to bring about sustainable changes in policies andpublic systems in their community and have a positive impact and long lasting effect in the Bayveiw HuntersPoint/Visitacion Valley neighborhoods and San Francisco.  There is a need to provide Bayview’s residents with education, information, support, access to resources andthe tools necessary to co-exist with each other. An additional and more important need is to encourage opendialogue and multicultural exchanges between the API, African American and Latino communities as part ofthe effort to raise awareness, promote diversity, understanding, tolerance and respect as a means to end theviolence that disrupts the healthy development of the Bayview and its communities of color. During schoolyear and summer cycle, participants will plan, develop and implement activities that promote tolerance, understanding and appreciation of each other's culture, history and experiences through intensive youth andleadership development trainings, and learning and service opportunities. Participants selected as peerleaders will undergo training during the summer. Providing youth with the skills and tools to spread themessage of tolerance and understanding will help bring about sustainable changes in policies and publicsystems in their community and have a positive impact and long lasting effect on the neighborhood and SanFrancisco.
