BHNC's Excelsior Community Center YLEAD program offers academically-linked curriculum based activities toyouth ages 12-17 in the Excelsior for teens who live, go to school and hang out in the Excelsior. In"Movements", youth become change-makers focused on improving relationships between youth and lawenforcement through the dialogue, collaboration and communication. This core focus area expands the workyouth have been doing in the Social Justice Program and further cultivates youth's leadership developmentskills through public speaking, media/photography campaigns, and the continued coordination of YouthSummits. Activities that cultivates and foster arts and creativity from spoken word to poetry writing. BHNCstaff facilitate relationship building opportunities between youth and various law enforcement agencies inSan Francisco such as SFPD, JPD, etc. as a means of 1). empowering youth to be seen (by self and others) asvital, valuable resources to their communities, and 2). bringing law enforcement officials to the table foraccountability and to foster dialogues. All program activities are organized through a curriculum focused onvarious social movement themes and leadership skills development. Community service learning opportunities are incorporated and available through BHNC's senior and volunteer programs. The youth are able to createand participate on events and activities with the community such as community clean ups. A weekly foodpantry at the Excelsior Community Center - where over 450 families are served every Wednesday, has beenan excellent chance for Movements youth to work alongside seniors and adults while serving hundreds oflow-income community members, practicing and applying their linguistic and cultural skills (pantryparticipants are often LEP, immigrant and elderly members of the population).
