Organization Description:

Tilden Park is by far the best nature destination in the East Bay. It is replete with gorgeous hiking trails, open meadows, barbecue pits and picnic tables (reserved by site), a swim-friendly lake with sand beach, a carousel, pony rides, farm, and steam train. You would be hard-pressed to enjoy all that Tilden has to offer in one day. The views and curvy roads on Grizzly Peak bring tourists from all over to marvel at San Francisco.Lake Anza Lake Anza is a nice swimming hole for all ages. Calm waters and sandy beaches make it a favorite for parents of toddlers. There are lifeguards on duty during posted days and hours. Showers and changing rooms are available, as well as a vending machine or two. There is plenty of parking, and picnic grounds are located nearby. Fishing is permitted at the lake all year. There is very little shade and it does get quite windy.Picnic Spots This is what childhood memories are made of. There are so many great spots throughout the park to BBQ, picnic, play frisbee or soccer, or just sit and have a conversation. To reserve a site, or for more information, call (510) 636-1684.Steam Train The Steam Train offers rides along the scenic ridge on a scaled-down steam train. Kids will want to ride again and again through the miniature town and shady trees. The train rides from 11am–6pm on weekends and holidays. In the summer, the train is open Mon–Fri 11am–5pm. For information call (510) 548-6100.Nature Area & Little Farm Kids can learn all about Tilden's surprising variety of plants and animals through the nature programs at the Little Farm and the Tilden Nature Area and Environmental Education Center (EEC).Carousel/Merry-Go-Round A highlight of any kid's visit to the park, the carousel is open on weekends from 11am–5pm, and on some holidays and school breaks. Tickets are $2 per ride and $10 for 7 rides. Celebrate a birthday here—packages are $10–$17 per guest.   Hiking and Biking A walk along Nimitz Way, popular with hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians, affords spectacular views from the crest of the East Bay hills. The East Bay Skyline National Recreation Trail follows Nimitz Way and other Tilden trails during part of its 31-mile route.
