Organization Description: 

One of the finest botanical gardens in the country, the San Francisco Botanical Garden features a spectacular array of plants from the Mediterranean and other mild, temperate climates, to high-elevation tropical cloud forests. It's a great place to stroll in the sun, run around, and introduce your kids to flora.They post an extensive course catalog on their website filled with classes, workshops, and events for the whole family. Children can browse through a collection of over 1,000 volumes of children's horticulture books at the Garden's Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture. They also have a lot of online teaching guides with activities that are fun to do with the kids.Classes:Sprinkled mostly throughout the summer months, the SFBG offers family adventures and classes for ages 3-14.  Their robust youth education program also boasts online resources and school group guided walks.  Adventure #3, developed in collaboration with Urbia, is available at any time for a self-guided adventure through the Garden.  Pick up the Urbia Guide: "Seeking California in a World of Plants" at the Garden bookstore, and follow clues in the booklet that lead to a hidden reward!  Lovers of Geo-Caching will enjoy this adventure experience.  Classes and evening events are also available for adults.  Please see the website for their full course catalog.2013 Funday on Sundays:Storytime in the book-nook with comfy kid-sized cushions, stuffed animals and lively readers.  Guided family garden walks and nature craft activities.  Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.Dates: April–SeptemberAges: 3–10Days/Times: First and Third Sundays, 10:30am–3pmCost: FREE (admission required as above for docent walks following story readings)2013 Family Adventures:Meet in the Exhibition Garden just off the main gate at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way. Enjoy a variety of adventures in the Garden with your little ones, including a garden walk, circle time with stories and singing, and simple craft activities designed to develop your child's curiosity about the natural world. Dates: July 12– August 9Ages: 3–5Days/Times: Friday mornings, 10am–12pmCost: FREE with regular admission2013 Bean Sprouts Family Days:A great afternoon outing with the kids!  Bring a picnic and walk out to the west end of the Garden for craft and nature activities and do some volunteer work in the native beds and California nature trail.  Take the opportunity to show your kids how much fun it can be to give back while you help water the garden, dig in the sand dune, go on a bug hunt, play pine cone basketball, create an herb bundle and much more! Dates: June–AugustAges: All agesDates/Times: Second and Fourth Saturdays, 12pm–3pmCost: FREE with regular admission 2013 Summer Reading Club:Supplement your summer reading and introduce children to new nature related reading themes and garden activities each week.  Kids plant seeds in the Children's Garden as they reach weekly reading goals, and receive a special prize for completing the entire 8–week program. Dates: June 2–July 28Ages:  3–14Dates/Times: Drop-in hours, Weds–Mon 10am–4pmCost: Library admission FREE, Garden activities FREE with regular admission

Golden Gate Park
Ages Served: 
FREE for San Francisco residents, members, children under 4 and school groups; non-residents: $7 for adults, $5 for youth (12–17) and seniors (65+), $2 children 5–11, $15 for families (2 adults and all children under 17 residing in the same household). FREE second Tuesdays of every month, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Years Day.

Getting There: 
Moderate street parking on weekdays. Muni: 5, 44, 71Inside the Park: The Shuttle Service, a public service of the Golden Gate Park Concourse Authority, operates 9am–6pm weekends, public school vacation days, and major holidays. Starting at McLaren Lodge on the eastern edge of the Park and Ocean Beach on the western side, black Bauer shuttles pick up and drop off passengers at 15 Park locations, including the UCSF garage. Tickets are $2 for an all-day, round trip pass.Parking for cars and bicycles is convenient in the Music Concourse Garage.  Access to the garage is from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive across from the Botanical Garden. The south pod of the garage is closest to the Botanical Garden.  Hours: 7am–7pm year round except Thursday (7am–11pm). $4.50/hour weekdays ($25 maximum), $5/hour weekends ($28 maximum).
