The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) is one of the oldest and most respected contemporary art schools in the country. Famous alumni include Annie Leibovitz, Rigo23 (you’ve seen his murals across town), Jerry Garcia (yes, him!), and many, many others. The school is proud to share its esteemed faculty and inspiring facilities through its Community Education Program. SFAI's City Studio program provides an opportunity for high school students in selected schools to gain practical, social, and research experience in urban sites and community facilities.Classes:SFAI's PreCollege and Young Artist programs offer evening and Saturday classes in the spring. Classes are non-credit but are a college-preparatory supplement to most high school curricula. High school students can sign up for art courses that are not available in their schools, such as painting, drawing, photography, and portfolio development. Classes meet for 6 sessions and cost $250.SFAI’s City Studio program runs arts programs at community centers such as the Bayview Opera House, SCRAP, Excelsior Boys and Girls Club, Galeria De La Raza, The Lab, SOMArts, and several studios in the East Bay. Students who come from underserved neighborhoods learn skills in fine arts and are assisted in putting together portfolios for art programs. Classes include photography, filmmaking and video, electronic music and sound composition, graphic arts and design, sculpture and installation, ceramic sculpture, youth journalism, and authoring video games. City Studio also offers students a chance to apply for a scholarship to SFAI’s PreCollege program.Camps:PreCollege ProgramFor high school students who have completed 10th grade, SFAI offers a five-week program for learning what life in art school is all about.
