Hijos de la Musica Latina is an amazing resource for youth music education in the Latino community. The organization seeks out young musicians interested in salsa and Afro-Cuban music. Students may be from families who are not financially able to afford music classes for their kids.Aspiring musicians audition with experienced instructors to get full and partial scholarships for low-cost music lessons and to participate in youth ensembles. Auditions are held in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. Hijos de la Musica Latina works with the school district and Latino community organizations to get the word out on available scholarships. See their website for application information.Classes are held Mondays through Fridays, from 3:30pm–6:30pm. They offer twelve-week classes in the fall, spring, and summer. Students get a half hour of private instrumental lessons and an hour of music theory. The rest of the time is spent with ensembles on Saturdays or Sundays.
