Organization Description:

The mission of HI USA is to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. Our vision is for guests to become caring global citizens who are catalysts for intercultural exchange and understanding stewards of the earth. We work to achieve this through the following activities:

  • Promote global awareness through a network of welcoming, comfortable, and affordable hostels that encourage exploration and nurture cross-cultural communication, and through programs that interpret culture principally through interaction among hostellers and community members.
  • Encourage educational travel through information, activities, and services that facilitate safe, affordable, and culturally sensitive hostel travel for people of all ages.
  • Protect the environment through activities that promote meaningful, low-impact travel using hostels and that focus on the conservation and interpretation of the built and natural environment.
  • Broaden community participation through involvement of all members of the community in hostel travel, programs, and volunteer participation.

Hostelling International USA (registered as American Youth Hostels, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization that has been serving young travelers for 79 years strong. Founded in 1934 to promote international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling, Hostelling International USA (HI USA) currently operates a network of over 50 quality hostel facilities across the United States. While each hostel offers a unique and local stay experience all provide inexpensive, safe, clean and fun accommodations. Our hostels range from urban high-rise buildings with hundreds of beds, to neighbourhood settings in smaller centers, to scenic and more remote locations on coastlines and parklands. In addition to being a great place to stay, HI USA hostels offer a wide range of fun activities, events and educational programs that enrich the travel experience and create opportunities for greater intercultural awareness and understanding. We are the American affiliate of the Hostelling International (HI), which is overseen by the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF). The global HI network offers more than 4,000 hostels in over 80 countries. The HI blue triangle with the hut and tree is the internationally recognized trademark and seal of approval of the IYHF, assuring travelers quality, affordable accommodations that are routinely inspected. You can expect a friendly face and warm welcome wherever you travel with HI!
