Organization Description: 

Located in Golden Gate Park, the de Young is San Francisco's oldest museum. Its collections include American paintings, decorative arts and crafts, and arts from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, as well as Western and non-Western textiles. Long known as the City's Museum, the de Young is particularly recognized for its many educational arts programs for children and adults.The museum re-opened in 2005 and is now a state-of-the-art facility that integrates art, architecture, and the natural landscape in an architecturally astounding structure.Classes:The de Young Museum hosts a free, drop-in family program Doing & Viewing Art (for ages 4 to 12) on most Saturdays from 10:30am–noon. Family tours are followed by related hands-on art projects led by professional artists. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Free after museum admission; special exhibition surcharge may apply to certain sessions. Space is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis. Register 15 minutes before the start of class. Check the website for the online calendar and themes.The de Young offers a series of afterschool classes for children in grades 1–8. Art after School offers an in-depth exploration of world cultures through the museum's extensive collections of art from Africa, Mesoamerica, Oceania, and North America. $20 per member and $25 per non-member. Reservations required. Each class includes two sessions.Camps:The de Young offers a week-long museum art camp for children and young teens that features explorations of the museum's galleries, adventures in Golden Gate Park, visual and performing art activities, as well as instruction by professional teaching artists. Some street parking, as well as a paid lot.Muni: N Judah, 5, 44, 71Inside the Park: The Shuttle Service, a public service of the Golden Gate Park Concourse Authority, operates 9am–6pm weekends, public school vacation days, and major holidays. Starting at McLaren Lodge on the eastern edge of the Park and Ocean Beach on the western side, black Bauer shuttles pick up and drop off passengers at 15 Park locations, including the UCSF garage. Tickets are $2 for an all-day, round trip pass.
