This dance company, headed by award-winning international artist and choreographer Carolina Lugo, offers fun and creative classes for youth emphasizing musicality, coordination, and dance as an art form. Students are exposed to the traditions of Spanish cultural arts: Spanish Dance, Flamenco, Spanish Classical, and "Ballet Latino."Students learn the art of the castanets, which develops musicality and high coordination skills needed for this art form. Upper level students learn to use the Spanish fan and manton (Spanish shawl) and how to incorporate these props into a dance. All classes are conducted in Spanish and English. Placement is determined by aptitude, experience, and other factors, rather than age alone. For students desiring a comprehensive curriculum, Brisas de España offers a modern dance technique, "Ballet Latino" and composition, complimented by classes in Flamenco rhythms and interpretation of musical compositions of leading 20th Century Spanish composers.Brisas de España offers a training program for children ages 7 to 12, teens ages 13 to 17, and an apprentice program for young adults ages 18 to 24. Parent and me classes are also available in Pleasant Hill. All students participate in the Annual Student Spring Concert in April and selected students are invited to perform in the Christmas Program in December. The junior performing company, Azucar y Canela, provides performance opportunities for experienced, committed dancers–participation is by invitation only.
