Breakthrough San Francisco (formerly Summerbridge) at SF Day School is a tuition-free, year-round, academic enrichment program for highly motivated students from underserved communities in San Francisco. Breakthrough students are hardworking individuals who aspire to go to college and are willing to push themselves to excel academically. Accepted students make an eight-year commitment to be in the program, with the goal of attending and succeeding at a college-preparatory middle school, high school and competitive four-year college. Each summer until graduation from middle school, Breakthrough students attend our intensive six-week summer program, taking rigorous classes in reading, writing, math, and science. Students have the opportunity to engage in exciting electives such as dance, arts and crafts, and soccer. To be prepared and get ahead for the coming school year, students receive two hours of homework each night during the summer. All summer classes are taught by trained college students aspiring to be future educators. During the school year, fifth through eighth graders attend our after-school program for tutoring and homework support with trained volunteer tutors. Students also have the opportunity to attend a local museum, college, aquarium or outdoor trip at least one Saturday per semester. Additionally, Breakthrough offers extensive support to families and students during the middle and high school application process. Breakthrough also offers continued support for the high-schoolers in the program. Students interested in this rewarding program are eligible to apply during the fall of their fourth grade year and must complete a paper application. Applications are available in November on Breakthrough San Francisco’s website or by contacting Breakthrough SF’s office.
