Explore the rhythms and dances of Peru’s coastal region with native instructors Peta Robles (Peruvian national percussion champion and master of the cajón, and choreographer, producer and cultural activist Gabriela Shiroma, director of De Rompe y Raja Cultural Association. In this hands-on workshop for families, participants will learn some of the most well known traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythms, songs and dances. From the cajón(wooden box drum) now considered a staple in Latin percussion kits around the globe, to the exciting zapateo (footwork), this family-friendly workshop will share the beauty of Perú’s African heritage and demonstrate how percussion and dance are integrated, demonstrating styles such as the festejo, landó andmarinera. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to play, sing and dance to the beautiful rhythms of Perú with the entire family! Some instruments will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own percussion instruments. This workshop is ideal for children age 7 and older, teens, and adults.
