Description

This branch of the YMCA serves a diverse population. They have a well-equipped facility that has a lot to offer the whole family.

Classes: Teen memberships at the Buchanan YMCA include an orientation on equipment and full use of the facilities. They have a basketball gym and offer aikido and tai chi classes on Saturday mornings. Teen memberships cost $20 per month.

Camps: The Buchanan YMCA offers day camps and Junior Leadership programs in the spring, winter, and summer. The well-trained staff focuses on giving children opportunities they don't normally have in the inner city. Kids go on outings to the beach, parks, museums, pools, and other places, in addition to sports and art activities at the facility.

2013–2014 Winter Camp Sessions:
Session 1:
December 23–December 27 (no camp December 25)
Session 2: December 31–January 3 (no camp January 1)
Ages: Grades K–5, 6–8 (Junior Leaders)
Times: 7:30am–6pm
Cost: $160 per week (K–5), $128 per week (6–8) plus a $25 non-refundable deposit for each camp session.

2013 Summer Camp Sessions:

June 3–August 9 (no camp July 4)
Ages: Grades K–5; grades 6–8 (Junior Leadership/CIT)
Days/Times: Mondays through Fridays, 7:30am–6pm
Cost: $119–$200 per week for grades K–5, $159 per week for grades 6–8 (Junior Leadership Program)

2013 Spring Break Session:

Ages: Grades K–5; grades 6–8 (Junior Leadership/CIT)
Days/Times: Mondays through Fridays, 7:30am–6pm
Cost: $200 plus $50 program membership fee; $160 for grades 6–8

Afterschool: Buchanan Y hosts afterschool programs at New Traditions Alternative SchoolDr. Cobb Elementary SchoolDe Avila Elementary School, Rosa Parks Elementary SchoolJohn Muir Elementary School, and Wallenberg High School.

New Traditions Before and Afterschool Program operates during the school year Mon–Fri, 7:30am–9:30am; 3:30pm–6:30pm and serves students in Grades 3–5 in English, Spanish and Mandarin.  This program maintains a balance of academic support, and enrichment and recreation everyday. Youth participate in outdoor sports, gardening, dance, cheer, music and cooking among other classes. This is a fee based program, with financial assistance provided for qualifying families.

Parent Resources: The San Francisco SafeStart Initiative works with YMCA Urban Services in the Buchanan facility to support families with children up to 6 years old dealing with abuse and violence at home and in their communities. Services are free and confidential. Call (415) 292-3023 for more information on the SafeStart Initiative and the Truancy Intervention and Youth Empowerment programs.

The Buchanan YMCA offers Kids Night Out a few times a year. Check their website for the most current dates. Your kids will enjoy date night as much as you will! $40 per child with a $5 discount for additional siblings.
