The Bakar Fitness and Recreation Center is an exciting place in the ever-growing Mission Bay neighborhood. The facility caters to the UCSF community and surrounding areas such as Potrero Hill and SOMA. They have drop-in recreation activities for the whole family, such as Drop-in Family Badminton, Family Free Play, Pajama Party Madness ($20–$30 per child), Leave Your Parents At Home nights, and Drop-in Dodge ball. They also have two great pools offering family swim, parent/toddler time, and parent/child swim classes. Extensive information on their fitness and recreation programs is available on their website.
Bakar’s youth and family programs include Kindergym, tae kwon do (taekwondo), squash, Kids’ Hip Hop, soccer, squash, and youth sports leagues. The aquatics program offers classes such as parent/child, toddler, children, teen, adult, family, kids water polo, and recreation swim. They also host a kids swim pre-team. Private and semi-private lessons are also available.
UCSF Camps mission is to foster self-esteem and friendships by providing youth with fun, active, and engaging activities and trips. Staff are dedicated to building a community environment with camp families where youth feel safe while having the opportunity to just be kids. Youth gain an understanding and appreciation for nature, by participating in local trips with environmental and educational opportunities. They encourage an active lifestyle with organized team games and fun activities like swimming and rock climbing. The amazing staff is educated in youth development and share a passion for working with youth.
2013 Summer Specialty Camps:
Mornings are dedicated to developing and applying specific skills within small, focused groups; afternoons consist of swimming, group games, arts and crafts, and mini field trips. Youth must be able to swim 25 yards and tread water for one minute to participate.
